Ok, I confess. I am a major science fiction geek. I looove sci-fi! As a kid, I read through all the sci-fi books my school’s libraries had. I cut my teeth on books by Clark, Asimov, Heinlein and their buddies. Any time a science fiction movie or television series comes out, you can bet I’ll be seeing it. I can’t help myself. X-files may not have been classic hard-core, space opera sci-fi but it was the basically the only science fiction on television at the time and it was AWESOME!
The kiddos got a laugh at my expense tonight as I camped out in front of the television watching for the football game to end and X-Files to start (family joke, since they know football bores me). They may have teased me, but they all stayed to watch X-Files also.
After the show I went to my drawing desk to start Art 365-16-24 for tonight. The kiddos came over to see what I was working on and no one was surprised that I was drawing a Roswell Grey. What was surprising was how they stuck around volunteering ideas for his design. Round body, skinny body, short legs, long legs, feet without legs- this little alien turned into quite the group effort. My fave was when R1 transformed one of my rough sketches into an evil alien chicken!!
After I had added some extraterrestrial color with Twinkling H2Os, everyone got a chuckle from how ‘their’ project had turned out. Personally, I think it is funny and cool how my little cartoons and manga chibis get more involvement and enthusiasm from the kiddos than ‘important’ studio paintings. It’s nice to have an interest in common that we can bond over. That is a rare and precious thing between teens to twenties and a mom.
Remember, faith works!
